USP Purified Water Testing

Microtest is among the most capable, experienced laboratories for USP purified water testing to United States Pharmacopeia (USP) specifications. We can even advise how to set up your pharmaceutical water testing program to meet specific regulatory requirements. Our microbiological and chemical testing services categories include the following:

  • Purified water — for cleaning or topical use
  • Water for injection — to be used within the human body
  • Purified water system validation — covering complete water dispensing systems for pharmaceutical operations

With purified water, bioburden testing establishes the number of microorganisms in a water sample, ensuring bacterial loads don’t exceed mandated USP levels. Conductivity testing establishes a sample’s ability to conduct electricity, which relates to the number of dissolved salts (ions) in the sample; a high ion count lowers water purity and may indicate a processing problem. Total organic compounds (T0C) testing finds whether carbons in the sample are maintained below a mandated limit of 500 parts per billion (ppb); high TOC is a reliable indicator of sample contamination.

Testing water for injection also adds endotoxin testing. Designed to detect the toxins produced when cell walls in certain bacteria are broken down, this includes heterotrophism plate counts and membrane filtration.

When performing purified water system validation, Microtest microbiologists characterize water samples to make sure they meet qualifications. Initial validation usually comprises a 30-day monitoring program with samples — gathered by our experts onsite, or provided via courier — from a number of water dispensing sites in a given system. Once a system passes initial checks, routine monitoring helps ensure water purity year-round.

Microtest has the experience to meet all your purified pharmaceutical water testing needs. Recent investments have added even more analytical equipment to our water testing lines, so we can handle large numbers of samples simultaneously for even your largest USP purified water project.
